For most serious golfers, Pine Valley provides the ultimate golfing experience. However, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club also gives it a run for the title. After all, Shinnecock Hills is also consistent in being considered as one of the world’s premier golf courses. The course has been named second by Golf Digest in 2007, 2008 and third in 2009.
A trip to Biarritz, France started it all. In 1889, William Vanderbilt, Duncan Cryder and Edward Mead met professional golfer Willie Dunn, who was building a golf course at the resort.
Back in the U.S., Meade and Cryder then scouted for a place for a golf course near New York City. They decided on the sand hills adjoining the Long Island Railroad, east of the Shinnecock Canal. They and several of their wealthy friends bought 80 acres for $2,500.
It was soon after this that Willie Dunn was secured to take charge of designing the course. Dunn proceeded to design and build a course that up to now, still stimulates and challenges the senses of the game’s best players.
In 1891, with the help of 150 Shinnecock Indians, a 12-hole course was constructed and was expanded to 18 holes four years later. The course has been upgraded and added several times afterward.
In 1891, not only was it a founding member of the United States Golf Association, it also became America’s first incorporated golf club and women were granted full membership from the start. In addition, it became the first club to have a clubhouse which was designed by famed architect Stanford White.
This par-70 course has been using the same layout since the 1930s. Although Shinnecock is a very old course, it has not succumbed to the pattern of other golf courses that have deteriorated in their requirements of good golf shots and the game itself.
This is not the case with Shinnecock Hills course. Even with the elevated tee areas on the holes, Shinnecock Hills is still a challenge. What makes this a challenge for golfers is the unique part of the course which features long par-4 holes that play downwind and short par-4 holes that play against the wind. It is a course that is challenging off the tee and from the fairway.
Shinnecock Hills course is also known for its tight, tree lined fairways and undulating, very fast greens. Each hole has complete definition and different and requires a great amount of skill to play properly.
Shinnecock Hills course affords any golfer the most pleasant but challenging 18 holes of golf. From one through eighteen, it is true golf – a fair yet tough test, and a golf links that ultimately stimulates all the senses of the world’s best players.
